Weaning from a Pacifier: When and How to Say Goodbye

AAP Logo

Pacifiers can be incredibly soothing for babies and young toddlers. They help satisfy the natural sucking reflex and can even reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in infancy. But as children grow, long-term pacifier use can begin to interfere with dental development and speech. Knowing when—and how—to say goodbye to the pacifier can make the transition smoother for both you and your child.

WHEN TO WEAN
Most pediatricians and dentists recommend beginning the weaning process between 12 and 24 months of age. By age 2, frequent pacifier use may increase the risk of dental issues like an open bite or changes in the roof of the mouth. Prolonged use past age 3 increases the likelihood of needing orthodontic treatment later on.

HOW TO WEAN
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but here are a few strategies that can help:
  • Gradual Reduction: Start by limiting pacifier use to naps and bedtime. Once your child adjusts, begin phasing it out during sleep as well.
  • Cold Turkey: Some parents find success in stopping pacifier use all at once, especially if the child is already showing signs of readiness.
  • Trade or Transition: Offer a special reward, comfort object, or toy in exchange for giving up the pacifier. Books about giving up pacifiers can also help prepare toddlers emotionally.
TIPS FOR A SMOOTHER TRANSITION
  • Choose a calm period: Avoid major life changes (like moving or starting daycare) during the weaning process.
  • Offer comfort in other ways: Extra cuddles, a consistent bedtime routine, and positive reinforcement can help ease the loss.
  • Be consistent: Once you've begun the process, try not to reintroduce the pacifier—even during tough moments.

Weaning from a pacifier can be an emotional milestone, but with consistency, encouragement, and a little patience, most toddlers adapt faster than expected.
